Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One meticulously recreates key sequences from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining — but then proceeds to populate them with CGI zombies. (Doctor Sleep, released a few weeks ago, recreates The Shining’s sets equally faithfully, though its cast is no match for the original.) Ready Player One also suffers from too much expository dialogue: it takes around twenty minutes to establish the rules of the game played by the central characters.
